Ok so this post is actually about the COADY institute, which I had the chance to explore when I was at St.FX, but before I start I want to thank every one of my readers SO MUCH because after my last post my blog surpassed 1,000 views!! Thank you for reading what I write, it means a lot to me!
Anyway, something super unique about St.FX University is the COADY institute, where leaders from around the world are brought together and taught skills to better their communities, and to improve in their domain – International or community development.
On top of just being gorgeous, the institute has a pretty great philosophy. It focuses on a citizen led, community driven, and asset based approach to community development (ABCD), where the glass is always full, no matter how much water you pour into it!
What is asset-based community development you ask? It is looking first at what a community has to offer in the way of assets, rather than focusing solely on what they need and what you can provide them with, which is how many organizations work. It means taking the time to get to know their strengths, and then asking them what they’d like help with, and how you can help. Don’t go in assuming they need help, because if you are looking for needs, needs are all you will find! I love this philosophy, and I’m going to be sure to keep it in mind throughout all the work I do!
